New research suggests that high dietary intake of polyphenols are associated with longevity
It is the first time that a scientific study associates high polyphenols intake with a 30% reduction in mortality in older adults. The research, published on Journal of Nutrition, is the first to evaluate the total dietary polyphenol intake by using a nutritional biomarker and not only a food frequency questionnaire. Probiotics and irritable bowel syndrome
Probiotics have numerous positive effects in the gastrointestinal tract. Recently, many studies have suggested that probiotics are effective in the treatment of IBS. The mechanisms of probiotics in IBS are very complex. The purpose of this review is to summarize the evidence and mechanisms for the use of probiotics in the treatment of IBS. Honey Trial Takes Sour Turn (CME/CE)
A clinical trial of medical grade honey to prevent infection in peritoneal dialysis patients did not have a sweet outcome -- the sticky substance didn't work. Indeed, in a subgroup of patients, prophylactic honey was associated with an increased risk of infection at the site of the dialysis catheter, according to David Johnson, PhD, of the Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane, Australia, and colleagues. The finding, from a randomized open-label trial, compared topical antibacterial honey with standard exit-site care or (in carriers of nasal Staphylococcus aureus) intranasal mupirocin (Bactroban) prophylaxis, Johnson and colleagues reported online in The Lancet Infectious Diseases.
