Acute upper respiratory tract infection increases the risk of excessive anticoagulation independent of antibiotic use. Antibiotics also increase the risk; however, most patients with previously stable warfarin therapy will not experience clinically relevant increases in INR following antibiotic exposure or acute upper respiratory tract infection. Clark NP, Delate T, Riggs CS, Witt DM, Hylek EM, Garcia DA, Ageno W, Dentali F, Crowther MA; for the Warfarin-Associated Research Projects and Other Endeavors Consortium. Progestational agents for treating threatened or established preterm labour
There is insufficient evidence to advocate progestational agents as a tocolytic for women presenting with preterm labour. Su LL, Samuel M, Chong YS. Cochrane Database Syst Rev. 2014 Jan 31;1:CD006770. PMID: 24482121
Diagnostic performance of lung ultrasound in the diagnosis of pneumonia: a bivariate meta-analysis
Lung ultrasound is a capable of diagnosing pneumonia with high accuracy and is a promising attractive alternative to chest radiography and thoracic CT scan. Hu QJ, Shen YC, Jia LQ, Guo SJ, Long HY, Pang CS, Yang T, Wen FQ. Int J Clin Exp Med. 2014 Jan 15;7(1):115-21. eCollection 2014. PMID: 24482696
Postpartum pelvic floor muscle training and urinary incontinence: a randomized controlled trial
Postpartum pelvic floor training did not decrease UI prevalence 6 months after delivery in primiparous women. Stratified analysis on women with and without major levator ani muscle defects showed similar nonsignificant results. Hilde G, Stær-Jensen J, Siafarikas F, Ellström Engh M, Bø K.

Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials on the Risk of Bleeding With Dabigatran
In conclusion, results suggest that dabigatran has a favorable safety profile with respect to bleeding compared with VKAs. Bloom BJ, Filion KB, Atallah R, Eisenberg MJ. Am J Cardiol. 2013 Dec 24. pii: S0002-9149(13)02448-X. [Epub ahead of print] PMID: 24440332
What Are the Effects of Teaching Evidence-Based Health Care (EBHC)? Overview of Systematic Reviews
EBHC teaching and learning strategies should focus on implementing multifaceted, clinically integrated approaches with assessment. Future rigorous research should evaluate minimum components for multifaceted interventions, assessment of medium to long-term outcomes, and implementation of these interventions. Young T, Rohwer A, Volmink J, Clarke M. PLoS One. 2014 Jan 28;9(1):e86706. eCollection 2014. PMID: 24489771
Cluster subcutaneous allergen specific immunotherapy for the treatment of allergic rhinitis: a systematic review and meta-analysis
Based on the current limited evidence, we still could not conclude affirmatively that cluster SCIT was a safe and efficacious option for the treatment of AR patients. Further large-scale, well-designed RCTs on this topic are still needed. Feng S, Xu Y, Ma R, Sun Y, Luo X, Li H. PLoS One. 2014 Jan 28;9(1):e86529. eCollection 2014. PMID: 24489740
Pharmacological interventions for hypertension in children
Overall, there are sparse data informing the use of antihypertensive agents in children, with outcomes reported limited to blood pressure and not end organ damage. The most data are available for candesartan, for which there is low-quality evidence of a modest lowering effect on blood pressure. We did not find evidence of a consistent dose response relationship for escalating doses of angiotensin receptor blockers, calcium channel blockers or angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors. All agents appear safe, at least in the short term. Chaturvedi S, Lipszyc DH, Licht C, Craig JC, Parekh R. Cochrane Database Syst Rev. 2014 Feb 1;2:CD008117. [Epub ahead of print] PMID: 24488616
